Three leading authorities in high-consequence animal diseases shared their insights in a scientific session sponsored by the FAZD Center at a major conference in Montreal in mid-July.

The center's associate director, Dr. Gary D. Snowder, chaired the session held during the 2009 ASDA-CSAS-ASAS Joint Annual Meeting.

  • Dr. Alfonso Clavijo, assistant director of the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, discussed the potential threat of emerging foreign animal and zoonotic diseases.
  • Dr. Thomas McKenna, director of the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, talked about the prevention and detection of these diseases.
  • Dr. Matt Cochran, emergency management veterinarian with the Texas Animal Health Commission, outlined measures for responding to outbreaks.
