Principal investigators from the FAZD Center's Information and Analysis Systems team recently made presentations to Dr. John Vitko, director of biological and chemical countermeasures division of the Science and Technology Directorate at the Department of Homeland Security.

The IAS investigators updated Dr. Vitko on FAZD Center products related to epidemiologic and economic modeling.

The FAZD Center's director, Dr. Neville P. Clarke, gave an overview of the FAZD Center's overall accomplishments, and how those accomplishments match up with DHS priorities.

Dr. Michael Orosz, the IAS team leader, then presented an overview of IAS products and projects. Dr. Orosz is a FAZD Center principal investigator from the University of Southern California, a core partner of the FAZD Center.

Dr. Tim Carpenter, a principal investigator from the University of California, Davis, discussed modeling for foot and mouth disease. UC Davis is also a core partner of the FAZD Center.

Dr. David Hartley, a principal investigator from Georgetown University, made a presentation about modeling the consequences of Rift Valley fever. Georgetown is an associate partner of the FAZD Center.

Col. John Hoffman (USA, Ret.) brought Dr. Vitko up to date on the National FAS Transportation Model Project, with will result in fully enabled epidemiologic and economic modeling concerning the interstate transportation of cattle and swine, and the potential effects in the event of an exotic animal disease outbreak.

Dr. Orosz talked about  the FAZD Center's Dynamic Preparedness System, which will offer the capability to simulate outbreaks and responses in near real-time for training planners and responders.
