Gary D. Snowder becomes FAZD Center's new associate director

Gary D. Snowder has joined the National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense as its new associate director.

Gary SnowderSnowder comes to the FAZD Center after a 20 year career as a senior research scientist with the Agricultural Research Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

He will work with the center’s thematic leaders and principal investigators to assist in the timely completion of FAZD Center projects; administer the daily operations of the FAZD Center in the absence of the director, Neville P. Clarke; work with the assistant director for external affairs, Thomas F. Powdrill, to enhance external funding to the center; and provide support for customer and stakeholder relations.

Snowder holds a bachelor of science in animal science from the University of California, Davis, a master of science in animal breeding from Texas A&M University, and a Ph.D. in animal breeding from Texas A&M.

Snowder’s recent research activities identified factors related to genetic resistance to major livestock diseases. He is the senior author or co-author for more than 200 publications in scientific and technical journals, and has been an invited speaker for more than 50 national and international meetings, conferences and special sessions. He has lectured at more than 50 major universities in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
