FAZD Center works with students at HS-STEM career development conference
Dr. Tom Powdrill, the FAZD Center’s assistant director for external affairs, participated in the career development fair and conducted a hot topic discussion at the 2008 Homeland Security Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (HS-STEM) Career Development Conference in Washington D.C.
The purpose of the October conference was to familiarize Department of Homeland Security supported students with careers and internships available in HS-STEM and provide a chance for the students to interact with representatives from Federal and National laboratories and DHS Centers.
The career development fair granted an opportunity for Powdrill to engage with students interested in career and internship avenues with the FAZD Center. Brochures and handouts were provided for students, who ranged from undergraduate to post doctoral.
In addition, approximately 40 students participated in the hot topic discussion that posed the chemical and biological question: What components should be considered in developing a successful strategy to defend the U.S. from an accidental, intentional or natural introduction to a FAZD?
“Feedback was great. A lot of ideas were generated as well as interest in the field and in the center,” Powdrill said. “Since I have returned I have received emails from students interested in the FAZD Center.”
