ABRCMS recognizes DeJesus-Velazquez for outstanding presentation
The 2007 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) recognized Noried M. DeJesus-Velazquez, a FAZD Center student participating in the 2007 DHS Minority Serving Institutions Summer Research Team Program, for an outstanding poster presentation.
The conference took place in Austin, Texas, on Nov. 7-11.
DeJesus-Velazquez received certificate of achievement recognizing her work in the category of microbiology. The conference was sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and managed by the American Society of Microbiology.
Her poster described her virology research conducted this summer at Texas A&M University under Dr. Blanca Lupiani, a FAZD Center principal investigator and an assistant professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University.
DeJesus-Velazquezis a member of a team from the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce and funded by the DHS Science & Technology Directorate's Office of University Programs. The team was led by Dr. Edu Suarez-Marinez, associate professor from the University of Puerto Rico-Ponce, where DeJesus-Velazquez is an undergraduate.
Her poster stood out from a collection of more than 1,000 posters presented at ABRCMS. The meeting is considered to be one of the most competitive national research meetings for minority students pursuing advanced training in biomedical sciences. This year's event attracted more than 2,600 students, researchers, administrators and faculty from more than 285 U.S. colleges and universities.
