Associate Director: Gary D. Snowder, Ph.D.

Gary SnowderDr. Gary D. Snowder joined the administrative staff of the National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense in May 2008 as the associate director.  Dr. Snowder provides scientific leadership in the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of the scientific programs of the Center, working in concert with the science leaders.

Dr. Snowder recently retired from the USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) after more than 20 years of outstanding service. Dr. Snowder was involved in agricultural research for over 30 years.  After graduating from University of California at Davis in Animal Science, he worked as a research assistant for nine years at the Texas A&M Research Center at San Angelo on projects related to genetic evaluation, range management, and noxious plants.  After graduating from Texas A&M with a master's and Ph.D. in Animal Breeding, he worked for Utah State University as a research project leader (1985-1987) overseeing a large cattle mountain grazing project in southern Utah.

In 1987, Dr. Snowder joined ARS as a geneticist at the US Sheep Experiment Station, Dubois, Idaho.  In 2002, at the invitation of the Associate Administrator of ARS he transferred to the US Meat Animal Research Center to develop a research program investigating genetic components of disease resistance in beef cattle.

Dr. Snowder has published more than 100 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals and has received six ARS performance awards.  He was an invited speaker at over 50 state and national livestock groups.  He received an OECD Fellowship Scholar award to present lectures at prestigious universities in Scotland, Wales, and England. His research has received international recognition with invitations to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Switzerland. He has served as a Research Project Leader on many different projects, chaired numerous national cooperating committees in USDA-CSREES, and served as section editor on many prominent journals.
