Today, accessing expert information needed to master the knowledge and skills necessary to become a veterinary assistant is easier than ever. The Veterinary Science Certificate Program (VSCP) now offers an easy-to-download version of Veterinary Science: Preparatory Training for the Veterinary Assistant.
Authored by Floron “Buddy” Faries, DVM, the 430-page book contains vital educational information for those training to become an animal and public health care assistant. The book is part of Dr. Faries’ VSCP that is conducted through the National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense (FAZD Center) and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, of which Dr. Faries is an Extension veterinarian.
Dr. Faries developed the 19-year-old VSCP, and today he and FAZD Center Program Manager and Theme Leader for Education and Outreach Systems Heather Simmons, DVM, oversee the program’s administration. Students in grades from K-12 and graduate levels seeking paraprofessional experience utilize the program as a means to enter the veterinary field.
“There is a great need for professionals trained in veterinary services and the One Health holistic health care approach in the United States,” says Dr. Faries. “The Veterinary Science Certificate Program reaches all level of students, and also offers job placement assistance for veterinary paraprofessionals that come out of the program. With a virtual publication, the program can reach even more potential workers to support human, environmental and animal medicine.”
To date, educators in 31 states have adopted the VSCP; annually more than 11,000 students are involved in the program. In addition, the VSCP curriculum is provided as an educational resource in Bahrain, Jamaica and Sierra Leon.
