Sanderson takes part in roundtable during Academy of Veterinary Consultants’ winter meeting
Principal investigator Dr. Michael Sanderson participated in a roundtable discussion on mass euthanasia in large feedyards in conjunction with the winter meeting of the Academy of Veterinary Consultants in Denver on Dec. 1.
He described FAZD Center-funded work for his project: Sustainability of the beef production system in the face of an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)
Vaccination capacity estimates were collected from livestock producers in Kansas during December as part of the livestock contact survey. This will allow Dr. Sanderson to efficiently collect data from a larger number of producers than originally proposed.
The modeling and economic teams have met to discuss the modeling scenarios that will be run. An initial series of scenarios have been identified for the initial runs.
As a result of this meeting, the economic model that will be used to estimate general market impacts associated with varying FMD outbreaks and control strategies has been updated and can now be simulated over a longer period into the future than the previous model.
Access to this model has been secured. Dr. Sanderson is initiating the building process of partial budgets for affected firms under various FMD outbreak and control scenarios.
Dr. Sanderson is a professor of production medicine at Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
